Children's Trail
What is yellow and green and fun all over? The Children’s Trail at the Florida Botanical Gardens!
Follow Flora on this Special Trail ...just for kids!
Flora will show you weird and wonderful things as you explore the Florida Botanical Gardens.
With the aid of a map available for download below or at the Garden Welcome Center, start at the Butterfly Garden, hike over to the boardwalk Tree Station, and scan for wildlife with the binoculars near the pond. Then stroll through our Fruit Garden, while our mascot, Flora, teaches fun facts about Florida fruits.
We've added music to the Gardens with your children as the musicians!
Outdoor musical instruments are so much fun to play and the new instruments are quite unique. One is called a Kalimba, which allows the musician the opportunity to play lots of tunes on its hexatonic scale (6 notes...do- re- mi- fa- sol- and la). Or, they can try their hand at the seven-tone Amadinda (do- re –mi-fa- sol- la- and ti).
These instruments, along with a an interactive butterfly puzzle, are placed in the butterfly garden.
The puzzle consists of three upright columns with pictures of beautiful caterpillars, chrysalis and butterflies. The columns present a challenge to the player: can they match the stages of any particular butterfly? There are twelve in all. The butterflies are all Florida natives and have been rendered by a generous artist who visited the gardens a few years ago.
Several child-sized logchairs and tables were carved out of local tree parts and donated. One set has been placed near the Butterfly Station of the Children’s Trail and the other overlooks the pond near the binoculars at the Wildlife Station. Both are delightful and are certain to provide many photo opportunities. Children's Trail signs:
