Heliconias are native to Tropical America and related to Bananas and the Travelers-Tree (Ravenala madagascariensis). Their large green leaves form a backdrop for various kinds of highly colored, very beautiful bracts. There are single specimen plants and mass plantings of Heliconias in the tropical garden and along the front entrance of the West Gardens. These plants are quite salt tolerant and grow in full sun to part shade. A fertile, moist soil is required for flower production.
